Until now, artificial pacemaker implantation had been recognized as the most effective treatment for SSS, with more than 50% of surgical pacemaker implantations surgery worldwide are performed for SSS patients ( 16). It was estimated that by 2060 there will be more than 172,000 new cases of SSS in the United States each year ( 15). Approximately, 1 in 600 patients with cardiovascular disease over 65 years old was a SSS patient ( 14). The incidence of SSS has been increasing in United States since 2012, with more than 75,000 people suffering from SSS each year. SSS was most prevalent in the elderly, and its 5-year survival rate was 62−65%, and the incidence of embolism was 15% ( 13). Epidemiological studies suggested that the age of onset of SSS is between the ages of 20 and 90 with an increasing incidence with age ( 12). The DANPACE study identified the incidence, predictors and prognostic significance of syncope in 1415 patients with SSS, and after a mean follow-up of 5.4 years the results found a higher mortality rate in patients with SSS who experienced syncope ( 11). The symptoms of SSS patients were gradually aggravated from mild fatigue, insomnia, memory loss, transient vertigo and syncope, which showed a positive correlation between the degree of organ ischemia and the duration of cardiac arrest ( 10). Impaired sinus node pacing with sinus bradycardia or sinus arrest, where the heart has difficulty compensating for the slowed or stopped heart rate with a reduction in cardiac output per boom, may result in signs and symptoms of cardiac insufficiency ( 9). Other studies suggested that aging and myocardial fibrosis may be a common pathogenesis of SSS and atrial fibrillation, but the research could not account for all cases of SSS and more in-depth pathogenesis needs further research ( 8). In a human and animal models of atrial fibrillation, atrial fibrillation induced remodeling of the right and left atria (including the sinus node), leading to atrial fibrosis, impaired calcium channels, and abnormal gene expression in patients with SSS, which exacerbates sinus node dysfunction and the progression of atrial fibrillation ( 5– 7). Although SSS was closely associated with atrial fibrillation, the exact underlying pathogenesis remains unclear ( 4). Supraventricular tachycardia occurs intermittently in about 50% of patients with SSS, which is known as brady-tachy arrhythmia syndrome, a typical clinical manifestation of SSS ( 3). Manifestations of SSS mainly include sinus bradycardia, ectopic atrial bradycardia, sinus node outlet block, sinus arrest, sinus node arrest, brady-tachy arrhythmia syndrome, chronotropic insufficiency, and rhythmic separation, etc. SSS is asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic in the early stages, and some patients with SSS are detected on physical examination. SSS is usually diagnosed by the patient’s signs and symptoms examination as well as electrocardiogram examination. Sick sinus syndrome (SSS) is a group of syndromes in which the pacing and efferent functions of the sinoatrial node (SAN) are impaired due to organic changes in the SAN and its surrounding tissues, resulting in chronic arrhythmias with insufficient blood supply to the heart, brain, kidneys and other organs ( 1). In conclusion, bibliometric analysis provided valuable information for the prevention, treatment and future research trends of SSS. In the field of basic applied research and basic research, atrial fibrillation and pacemaker cells were the focus of research. Clinical studies on SSS found that sick sinus syndrome, atrial fibrillation, and pacemakers were the top three keywords that had the largest nodes and the highest frequency. Pacemaker implantation, differentiation and mutation are research hotspots currently. Sick sinus syndrome, atrial fibrillation and sinus node dysfunction were the top three keywords that had the strongest correlation with the study. SSS was closely related to risk factors such as atrial fibrillation and aging. ![]() The results showed the United States dominated the field, followed by Japan, Germany, and China. ![]() 2,251 publications related to SSS were retrieved from Web of Science database from 2000 to 2022 and analyzed by using VOS viewer and CiteSpace software. ![]() Sick sinus syndrome (SSS) is a refractory arrhythmia disease caused by the pathological changes of sinoatrial node and its adjacent tissues. ![]() ![]()

Now, all these years later, it’s an exciting encapsulation of Hippo at what they do best – of a band operating at the height of their powers. Built on a guitar riff that had originally floated around as an idea during their Landmark era but didn’t make the album, the final version today is the sort of song the band would’ve only dreamed of writing at the beginning of their career. It’s a sprawling, cinematic track powered by propulsive drumming, high energy and penned as a full-group. The sinewy “Yippie Ki Yay” might be the outlier in its energy, in its anthemic encapsulation of loneliness. “Honeysuckle,” also known as honeyberry, is a plant that can endure extreme winter conditions – and is the song that directly addresses the hardship of perseverance most directly, a distillation of the idea that canopies across the whole EP. “Probably,” a spacious and low-key ballad was recorded in just three takes and is acoustic guitar-forward, while “Kick in the Teeth” feels more psychedelia-imbued. “Moonshine” is a post-apocalyptic indie-country love song, written by Luppen and his partner Raffaella it’s about falling in love with a world on fire, a final Tennessean sunset, deceptively upbeat. The EP is adventurous, and runs the gamut of genre, but the hook-laden songwriting and weirdo pop peeks through. The demos seamlessly flowed into the final product – Hippo Campus wanted the way they felt while recording to be immediately accessible to anyone who listened, so they embraced simplicity. With this EP, they capture the energy of the five of them playing live in a room. LP3 and Good Dog, Bad Dream skewed more experimental and glitchy, maximalist and unpredictable, but here the band wanted to get back to the core of their songs. It marks a new chapter for the band – embracing simplicity and hands-off, pared-back production. The songs were written mainly in Minneapolis, then recorded at Asheville’s Drop of Sun studios. Wasteland was recorded with longtime friend and collaborator Caleb Wright (Samia, Miloe, Baby Boys), and is the first batch of new music from Hippo Campus since the release of LP3. Early Hippo Campus records wanted to be cerebral, heady, to use poetic language and obscure their feelings – now, they want to be understood. Nearly a decade into being a band, Hippo Campus still embraces and is guided by the ethos of shaking it up, sonically or otherwise. They’ve always embraced the ride, the good and bad, trudging through together, and Wasteland is the most honest version of that. Since the very beginning, with their debut album, 2017’s Landmark, to 2022’s LP3, Minneapolis’ Hippo Campus - made up of vocalist/guitarists Jake Luppen and Nathan Stocker, drummer Whistler Allen, bassist Zach Sutton, and trumpeter DeCarlo Jackson – have tried to make sense of the world around them. It’s dispatched from an unnamed disaster spread out across the Midwestern plains the band was heavily inspired by country music, the way that songwriting gets straight to the point, and using that straight-forwardness, imagery, and dark humor as a vehicle for talking about the grief, loss, and love they’ve collectively experienced in the past year. The five songs collected on Wasteland are totems of friendship, hardship, heartbreak, and, ultimately, perseverance. ![]() On the horizon, a tornado-like entity looms – and instead of turning away, we go forward, plunging into the storm of unknown, and remaining somehow hopeful, in spite of it all. The storytelling on Hippo Campus’ new EP, Wasteland, is set against a dystopian, painterly backdrop, fragments of humanity lingering at the edges of the end. ![]() ![]() ![]() The more dirt you throw, the more likely you are to earn points in this game. And as the sirens were only meant to be heard outdoors, some residents indoors did not receive any indicators that a tornado was inbound. Some people wondered whether it was an all-clear. Two waves of sirens sounding in quick succession was not common, leaving many uncertain as to what it meant. Many of the survivors who received false alarms or heard tests in the past expressed they felt there was likely no real threat.Ī storm just north of town, unrelated to the Joplin tornado, prompted an initial tornado warning and round of sirens, adding to the confusion. That, combined with the already high false-alarm rate inherent to tornado warnings (a national average of 74%), fueled a distrust in the siren system. ![]() One of the key insights Kuligowski gleaned from 140 interviews was that the city audibly tested its sirens on a weekly basis. How did the tornado affect them? What emergency communications did they get, and how did they respond?” said Kuligowski, now a Vice-Chancellor’s Senior Research Fellow at RMIT University in Australia. I went from person to person and asked about what happened that day. “I walked through neighborhoods and visited some tents that FEMA put up. So why were so many people caught in the line of fire? To find out, Kuligowski and her colleagues engaged with town officials and spoke to as many survivors as they could meet. And the city engaged its siren system twice. The NWS’s warning for the entire city clocked in at 17 minutes before the tornado touched down, allotting residents several minutes more lead time than the average for the nation. That wasn’t the case for some Joplin residents who, just days earlier, were caught in the whirlwind. The two had a close call, even though they had a NOAA radio on hand and took immediate action. The pair sheltered in the basement of a college science building until the threat had passed. We were right in the tornado’s projected path, so we high-tailed it,” Levitan said. “I typed ‘college’ into my GPS since those campuses typically have more robust structures, and we found a small college only a few miles away. Knowing they were vulnerable on the road, the pair quickly sought refuge. Their NOAA weather radio - a special radio that can receive NWS alerts and warnings - told them a tornado was on the ground nearby, in the town of Sedalia. Marc Levitan, the lead investigator, and Erica Kuligowski, a NIST sociologist and fire protection engineer at the time, were driving along the highway when they heard a distinct tone. Emergency Communication Is Keyįour NIST researchers - three engineers and one social scientist - were on the ground in Missouri within two days of the tornado, but severe weather still lingered.
